21st Century New Christians¡¯Declaration

"Strive first for God Sovereignty and God¡¯s righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" - Matthew 6:33

1. Repentance

2. Rebirth

3. New Mission

1. Repentance: Reflection on and Repentance of the Sins Committed by Christianity for the past 2000 years

First, we seek to repent the many errors and terrible tragedies committed in the name of Christianity for the last 2000 years.

When Jesus came to this earth, he preferred the company of Galilee¡¯s poor, infirm, and marginalized weak, and with his words and actions spread the life and peace affirming God¡¯s Sovereignty. However, after Jesus¡¯ passing, the original spirit of Jesus¡¯ movement to realize God¡¯s Sovereignty on earth was gradually weakened with time. Eventually, the movement joined in collusion with existing imperial political powers, transforming itself into an empire of massacre and warfare rather than one existing to realize the life and peace of God¡¯s Sovereignty.

Furthermore, the organizations and church leaders who fancied themselves as the successors of Jesus¡¯ movement for God¡¯s Sovereignty constructed a Christian theological system that was far removed from Jesus¡¯ historical life and teachings. Ultimately, under the cloak of ¡°authenticity,¡± Christianity degenerated into a totalitarian system that demanded beliefs that were self-regulated. This Christian system was responsible for various doctrinal disputes, the Crusades, witch hunts, and all manner of unjust tragedies in which many lives were taken in cold blood.

Next, the 16th century witnessed the so-called Protestant Reformation, which rather than being a much-needed comprehensive reform of Christianity, only succeeded in preserving a barbaric and conquest-minded theology; consequently Christianity continued to operate within a framework that destroyed life and peace. Christian nations brutally colonized countries and continents all around the world, slaughtering or taking as slaves the existing natives. During these times, Christians justified their actions using the name of God, Jesus, and the Bible.

Instead of offering a warm sanctuary for the poor, the infirm, women, children, racial minorities and homosexuals, Christianity became a religion that instead oppressed and deceived the most oppressed members of society. While it is said that Christianity saved lives as well, it is an undeniable fact that Christianity has been responsible for the horrific murders of millions of people. Oh, God! Forgive us the sins committed in the name of Christianity so that such crimes will never happen again.

In addition, under the guise of missionary and evangelistic work, Christianity has denigrated and destroyed traditional cultures existing in all the countries and regions to which it has spread along its path of self-righteous exclusion. Rather than energizing a culture of creative cooperation, Christianity has instead treated all other religions and cultures as idolatry. Even today, the idea that ¡°Jesus is the only path to heaven, and everyone else is doomed to hell¡± is loudly proclaimed, instigating conflict and chaos in our society. We beg of God and all things living on earth for the forgiveness of the sins committed in the name of Christianity.

Christianity has also from time to time clashed with new scientific discoveries, such as when Christians rejected heliocentric theory and instead put scientific innovators on religious trials in order to put them to death. We sincerely repent such past wrongdoings. Even today, conservative Protestants continue to reject the outcomes of the natural sciences, such as Darwin¡¯s theory of evolution; scientific validity is instead judged by the yardstick of religious dogma, giving rise to pseudo-scientific creationism and intellectual design theory which only creates delusion. We sin by distorting God¡¯s creative world and existence in such ways.

We offer our penitence to God, whose love prefers the weak, and to the many grieving souls who suffered unjust death at the hand of Christianity. We beg forgiveness for the sins of our Christian religion. We will do everything possible to ensure that in the future Christianity can become a credible religion that is open to and promotes co-existence with honest scientific outcomes. Similarly, we will work harder to ensure that Christianity can become an inclusive religion that fosters mutual development with the other major religions of the world, such as Asia¡¯s Buddhism and Confucianism.

Now we sincerely repent for the past errors and tragedies committed in the name of Christianity, and we look forward to the rebirth of a new and healthy Christianity. Although mainstream Christianity has been responsible for many sins, we also believe that there have always been a minority of marginalized and unheralded Christians who remained faithful to God¡¯s path. We seek to follow in the footsteps of such believers to become true followers of Jesus, working to realize a new and healthy Christian era in the 21st century.

Give courage to all those who are resolved to the movement to bring a new and healthy Christianity to this world.

2. Rebirth: Transformation to a New and Healthy Christianity

Declaration of Commitment for the Rebirth of Today¡¯s Christianity

- In hopes for the sincere repentance of 2000 years of Christianity as well as its healthy transformation,

1. We accept that the Christianity existing in today¡¯s generation no longer gives forth light, and that Christianity is facing a ¡°crisis of theology¡± as well as a ¡°crisis of the church.¡± To overcome these crises, we aim to realize a lively .

2. We place the basis of our Christian faith on historical Jesus who initiated God¡¯s Sovereignty movement. In following his example, we aim to realize Christian faith that liberates all who are faced with marginalization and oppression in the world.

3. We oppose a coercive and violent Christianity that asserts that any Christian doctrine must be unconditionally believed. We aim to realize a Christian faith that practices love that is deeply rooted in daily life for the sake of those who are weakest and most vulnerable in the world.

4. We oppose the idea of the ¡°infallible Bible¡± that every single word written in the Bible is absolutely correct and pure truth. Instead, we aim to realize a theology that goes beyond the literal words of the Bible and allows us to find enlightenment by reflecting on the deep meaning inherent in God¡¯s acts of salvation.

5. We oppose the faulty perspective that understands all supernatural occurrences illustrated in the Bible as actual historical facts. Instead, we aim for a Christianity that is based on rationality and is in dialogue with scientific discoveries that have been made to this day.

6. We oppose an exclusive Christianity that fosters an aloof and combative attitude toward other religions. We aim to realize a Christian theology which, while maintaining the centrality of Jesus Christ, is characterized mutual transformation via openness to the diversity of the many healthy religions of the world.

7. We oppose a patriarchal Christianity which refuses the ordination of female clergies and justifies the degradation of women. We acknowledge the ideology of male domination deeply rooted in the history of Christianity, and aim to realize a Christian theology that promotes the mutual equality of man and woman in God¡¯s order of creation.

8. We oppose the understanding of God as an omnipotent, flawless, transcendent and imperial ruler. Instead, we aim to realize a Christian faith that believes in an accessible God who embraces even the sufferings of our imperfect world and works together with us to overcome and to create.

9. We oppose the antidemocratic and oppressive system and order spreading through modern religious institutions. Instead we aim for a Christian community characterized by a democratic communication structure which incorporates a diversity of voices from the bottom of our society.

10. Rather than the culture of Westernized church and ministry dominating the vast majority of Christian churches, we aim for the culture of our church and ministry that reflect the unique characteristics of our own culture.

11. Rather than religious services that simply encourage submission and worship of a transcendent ¡°king of kings¡± as the sole subject of faith, we aim for religious services that reflect the body and life of Christ and thus place our own bodies and life experiences as subjects of our faith in trying to follow Jesus.

12. We do understand the confession of sins not just simply through our personal and individual relationship with God. We instead hope to reconsider confession as a sincere act of penitence to be done together with God, the sinners, the victims of sinners, our neighbors, and the weak who are in constant suffering.

13. Our Christian faith is opposed to all acts of aggression, oppression, and violence perpetrated by powerful nations in the modern day. We aim for a democratic and ecologically responsible political and economic system that provides new alternatives to overcome the limits and vices of imperialism and capitalism.

14. We are fervently opposed to all manner of power holders and unjust laws which infringe on life and peace. We aspire for a Christian faith characterized by continuous nonviolent resistance to all the powers of death and violence until the day God¡¯s Sovereignty on earth is realized

15. Rather than trying to see a dualistic perspective of God vs. World, mind vs. matter, soul vs. body in understanding human life, we aim towards an integrate Christian theology that endeavors for a comprehensive , i.e. whole body of mutual relationships.

16. Instead of believing that the soul becomes immortal and enters heaven to gain salvation after death, we believe that the true gospel and salvation movement is one which seeks to change the world for life and peace , whether in this world or the next.

17. Rather than trying to go into some far off countries, we think that the true subject for Christian missionary work in the modern day is Christianity itself. It is from this perspective that we declare ourselves as the , who seeks first and foremost the sincere redemption and transformation of modern day Christianity.

3. Mission: From the Healthy Transformation of Christianity to the Healthy Transformation of the World

Now, the genuine mission can only emerge from a new and complete rebirth of Christianity itself. Therefore, will target decayed modern day Christianity as its first mission subject. From this particular perspective, we view Christianity as described below as , and thus we wish to assert in unmistakable terms that such can no longer be regarded as Christian.

¨ç Christianity which fails to recognize the errors and tragedies committed by Christianity over 2000 years.

¨è Christianity manifested in an ahistorical, addictive form of opiate religion which has dualistic world-view as its basis.

¨é Christianity which states that ¡°religious doctrine¡± must be believed and asserted, even if it is incomprehensible.

¨ê Christianity which demands blind obedience to the literal wording of the Bible and which teaches the supernatural as factual.

¨ë Exclusive Christianity which charges that ¡°Belief in Jesus means Heaven, all else means Hell,¡± and refuses acceptance of neighbor religions and cultures

¨ì Christianity that asserts the judgment of evil as a justification for violence and warfare

¨í Patriarchal Christianity that refuses ordination of female ministers and justifies the degradation of women

¨î Christianity which sells out Jesus and the Bible for the sake of anti-democratic, anti-life, and anti-peace measures.

¨ï Christianity which affirms laws and systems that suppress the weak and comfort the strong

¨ð Christianity which supports imperialism and neo-liberalism that destroy life and peace

¨ñ Christianity which emphasizes wrongheaded divine mystery and physical experience of the super-natural miracles

¨ò The Christianity of ministers who inherit churches to their own sons/daughters and seek only to increase church membership and power

Now, and must be distinguished from one another, and the true subject for Christian missionary work does not reside in some far off country, but is actually Christianity itself. From this perspective, establishing a frontline for a new Christian movement is the very least we can do in order to participate in the life and peace affirming movement for God¡¯s Sovereignty to spread light and salt to all the corners of the world.

We believe God¡¯s Sovereignty, which starts here and now, is already in the hands of those who are participating. We urge in all earnest for the committed participation and solidarity of all who are conscious of our current situation.
